Browser compatibility

Push works in every browser whose vendor runs a Web Push service. Here is what each one needs.

Push uses the Web Push standard, so it works wherever the browser vendor runs a push service. Most browsers work out of the box; a few need one extra step.

Support by browser#

BrowserPlatformsSupportNotes
ChromeWindows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOSSupportedWorks out of the box. The browser must be running, even in the background, to show a notification.

BraveDesktop, AndroidWith a stepTurn on Use Google services for push messaging in Brave's privacy settings first. It is off by default.
In-app browsersInstagram, Facebook, TikTok and othersNot supportedLinks opened inside social apps run in a limited browser without push. Open the link in Chrome, Safari, Firefox or Edge instead.
Web viewsAndroid WebView, embedded browsersNot supportedEmbedded web views cannot register for push. Open the link in a full browser.

When the browser is closed#

On Android, iOS Home Screen apps and Safari on macOS, notifications arrive even when the browser is closed. Desktop Chrome, Edge and Firefox show them only while the browser is running. Anything sent while it is closed waits at the push service until the browser starts, or until the notification's ttl runs out. See message options.

Why an accepted notification may not show#

An attempt marked accepted means the push service took the message. It can still be hidden on the device when:

  • Do Not Disturb or a Focus mode is on.
  • The operating system has notifications turned off for the browser (macOS System Settings › Notifications, Windows Settings › System › Notifications, Android app settings).
  • Notifications were blocked for meslzy.com in the browser's site settings.
  • The browser groups or quiets notifications from sites it considers noisy.

Supported push services#

Push accepts a browser only when its subscription points at an official vendor push service over HTTPS, and sends only to these hosts:

VendorHost
Google (Chrome, Samsung Internet, Opera, Brave)fcm.googleapis.com
Mozilla (Firefox)updates.push.services.mozilla.com
Apple (Safari)web.push.apple.com, *.push.apple.com
Microsoft (Edge)*.notify.windows.com
NoteA browser whose push service is not on this list cannot connect; the connect request fails with 422 INVALID_SUBSCRIPTION. The full, illustrated list is on the supported browsers page.
